Michael Charles Treacy (1866 Derrew,
Kilquain, Galway - 1919 Quincy MA) I
came across some interesting information about my Grandfather Michael Charles
Treacy who was born in Derrew, Kilquain on 7 Nov. 1866. He was the
second son of Edward Treacy & Bridget Boland. He came to the USA in 1888.
He married in 1896 in Manchester, NH, was a Stonecutter and moved to the
Quincy, MA to the house where I grew up. He had 10 children. What
I found out then was that Michael C. Treacy became the Secretary of the West
Quincy Branch (local) of the Granite Cutters’ International Union
from 1903 until 1910 and from 1910 until 1917 he was on the National
Executive Council of the Granite Cutters’ International
Association of America. Since both my Father and I were long time
Union members, that is a big deal to me. Michael C. Treacy died on 26 Aug.
1919 of a Pulmonary Hemorrhage. The Granite Cutters’ Journal published
a Death Notice of him in their September 1919 issue. Here is what it says: “A good fellow, and a good union man has left
us. Michael Treacy, to whom I refer, died on Tuesday, August 26. For many
years he took an active interest in branch affairs, for a long time was a
member of the Executive Council. We have missed him from our meetings since
he became ill, and his ever ready smile and cheery voice will be missed. He
was one of those men who were fearless in expressing their views and
sentiments, no matter what the opposition might be, and many of us who have
differed with him many times, could not avoid having a strong feeling of
respect for the manliness of the man. He leaves a widow and a large family
and Quincy branch extends its sympathy to them in their great sorrow, but we
feel that they must be comforted by the knowledge that remembrance of him
must recall the honest, upright character which was so manifest in all his
actions. May he rest in peace. ” N. Williams Published in the Granite Cutters’

thought that it was a nice write up. The next day I learned that he was also
the President of Division 22, West Quincy, MA of the Ancient Order of
Hibernians from 1916 to 1918. My Father was only 10 years old when my
Grandfather died so we did not know all this information before last summer. I
have attached a photo of Michael C. Treacy from about 1903. Regards,
Jim

Patrick Treacy and Mary Egan of
Derrew, Kilquain, Galway Black – 1st
Generation Red
– 2nd Generation Green
– 3rd Generation 1. Patrick
Treacywas
possibly born in 1794 probably in Carhoon, Tynagh (also called Carrew). Tynagh
is a village approximately 3 1/2 miles West of Derrew, Kilquain. Patrick
Treacy’s only proven sibling/relative other than his descendants is Nicholas
Treacy (c. 1797-1886) from Carhoon, Tynagh. Family lore is that Patrick
Treacy lived in Carhoon before he moved to Derrew and that Nicholas Treacy
was his brother. The relationship has been proven though DNA testing of
proven descendants of both Patrick and Nicholas. Family Lore also says that
the Treacy Family might have originally come from Littleton, County Tipperary
before moving to Tynagh. Patrick Treacy married Mary Egan. Patrick moved to the Derrew, Kilquain farm in about
the early 1830’s.Patrick is listed in the 1856 Griffith’s Valuation
as living in Derrew, Kilquain Parish with a house, offices and land of nearly
60 acres. There are also many references to Patrick Treacy from Derrew in the
Irish
Petty Court Sessions Records. Patrick divided the 60-acre farm at
Derrew between two of his sons, Edward and Patrick after they married in the
late 1850’s. Patrick went to Sheeaunrush with the remaining family. He died
Nov. 14, 1878 in Sheeaunrush, Portumna, Galway. Nicholas Treacy (his son) was
the Informant, present at his death. (Portumna is a market town about 3 ½
miles South of Derrew). He had 9 children. Patrick Treacy
had at least 1 brother, Nicholas.See
Note #1.In1852
in addition to Nicholas a Widow Tressy
and a John Tressy were renting
properties at Carhoon &Skehanagh, Tynagh, Galway. They probably were
related to Patrick and Nicholas Treacy. Mary Egan was probably born about 1809 in
Kilmore, Killimor, Ballinasloe, Co. Galway, near Derrew. A Thomas Egan had 46 acres at
Ballycahill, Killimorbologue, Galway in the 1824 Tithe Applotments.
He might be her father. She married Patrick Treacy and lived at the Derrew
farm. She died Oct. 25, 1877 at Sheeaunrush, Portumna, Galway. Nicholas
Treacy (her son) was present at her death. She had 9 children. See
Probable/Possible Mary Egan Siblings.
See Note #2 Children of
Patrick Treacy & Mary Egan: 1.1 Edward Treacy was born circa 1830 in Tynagh or Killimor,
Galway, Ireland. He might have joined the Royal Irish Constabulary for a
short time. There is a record of an Edward Treacy who enlisted in the RIC in
1854 at age 20. He married Bridget
Boland (c. 1831 – Jan. 20, 1907)from Lisinanka in the Killimor area, on
Jan. 20, 1857. The Witnesses were John Boland & Michael Burke. They lived
at Derrew, Kilquain Civil Parish
between Portumna and Killimor. Edward is listed as small farmer on the Irish
Birth Certificate of Michael Treacy. He is listed in the 1883 & 1901
Derrew, Galway Land Records, and
as living in Derrew, Kilquain Parish in the 1901 & 1911 Irish Censuses.
There are also many references to Edward Treacy from Derrew in the Irish
Petty Court Sessions Records. Edward died July 12, 1916 in Derrew,
Galway. He had 10 children. Bridget Boland
(Bolan)
was probably born
around 1831in Lissaniska, in the Killimor area. I found records of a Bridget
Boland born either on Jan. 15, 1828 in Tynagh, Galway or on July 8, 1834
Ballinasloe, Galway (Ballinasloe is a town about 15 miles North of
Derrew). These probably refer to another Bridget Boland. She married Edward Treacy Jan. 20, 1857 in
Killimor, Galway. She is listed in the 1901 Census and Tracey’s of Galway
page 2. A living Boland relative told my cousin “she is of the same Boland family and she said that Edward Treacy and
his wife Bridget Boland were first cousins of each other, that is all the
information she had.”Edward Treacy’s Mother was Mary Egan Treacy and
Thomas Boland is married to Margaret Egan Boland. This makes me believe that
her parents might have been Thomas
Boland& Margaret Egan. She died at Derrew on Jan. 20, 1907, age 67 a
farmer’s wife. The informant was Edward Treacy. She had 10 children. Children of Edward Treacy &
Bridget Boland 1.1.1 Mary Anne Treacy was born in Killimor on Jan.

Since
in 1826 Edmond Treacy occupied 226 acres of land at Carrew, which is also a
name for Carhoon, in my opinion he might be an older generation relative
of our Nicholas & Patrick Treacy. A Patrick
Head was the other occupier with Edmond Treacy. A Patrick Head married a Bridget Treacy
in Tynagh on Feb. 14, 1814, no parents recorded. They had at least 6
children. A Patrick Head married a Winifred Treacy in Tynagh on
Jan. 30, 1825. They had at least 1 son. They were probably 2 different Patrick
Heads who married Treacy girls who might have been sisters, who knows?

Guardian Portumna Petty Sessions:
Monday - (from our correspondent)
Ellen Calahan summoned John Tracy for knocking her down with a blow of a shovel, with
which he struck her while on the ground, on the 27th of last month.
Ellen spun out a long and tangled yarn about some family settlements,
particularly about a third party (a man), whose services both she and the
defendant appeared to have some claim to, the end of which brought her to the
field of the defendant, on the day in question, where a wordy war took place,
and the assault complained of was perpetrated.
Witness produced, swore that she was not knocked down with the shovel,
but that Tracy gave her a poke of it in the ribs while she was on the ground.
The defendant said she came to grief by losing her balance, while on her marrow
bones, invoking her “seven curses” on his devoted cranium.
Captain McDonogh, in sentencing Tracy to pay
a fine of 5 Shillings or 14 days imprisonment, said that the act was very
unmanly, and but for the provocation he had received, the punishment was very
likely to be 5 Pounds.
Complainant - I was greatly hurt in the side,
your worship.
Captain McDonogh – A blister will cure it; and
when you get it, I would advise you to reserve a bit for your tongue, which is
with you, I think, a very unruly member.
The other cases for hearing were totally
devoid of public interest.

Patrick Tracy
summoned Thomas Broderick, of Garrinameta [Garraunnameetagh Galway?], for
carrying away bog-stuff, his property, for his own use, and for the purpose of
selling it to others. It appear in evidence, that a few years ago Tracy
[Broderick?] got possession of a farm of 10 acres, formerly held by Broderick.
Broderick stated that he retained three acres and the bog in question. John
Brishane, the bailiff, stated that three years ago, by direction of his master,
Mr. Smyth, of Masonbrook, he gave possession of Tracy's holding to Broderick,
who paid up the arrears of rent then due, amounting to £22, except three acres
which were to be reserved by Tracy, and which were to be as near his house as
possible; no mention was made of the bog.

Aug 1864 Nenagh Guardian Killimore Petty Sessions:
Saturday- (from our correspondent)
Before Major Patrick Kelly and James
McDermott, Esqrs. and Major Percy R. M.
Patrick Tracy summoned Thomas Broderick for
carrying away bog stuff, his (complainant’s) property, for his own use, and for
the purpose of selling it to others.
It appeared in evidence for complainant that
a few years ago Tracy got possession of a farm of 16 acres, formerly held by
Broderick, and this bog in which the trespass complained of as being committed,
was the turbary allotted to the farm. For the defendant it was urged, that he
still retained three acres of the land, and that he required his fair proportion
of the turbary, and likewise that Tracy never got possession of the bog in
question.
The Bench from the contradictory character of
the statements postponed the future hearing of the case for the evidence of
John Brislane, the bailiff on the property.
07 Sep 1864 Nenagh Guardian Killimore Petty Sessions:
Saturday- (from our correspondent)
Before James McDermott, Esq. J. P. and Major
Percy R. M.
The adjourned case of Patrick Tracy against
Thomas Broderick of Garrinameta (Garraunnameetagh is in Moat, Galway due West
of Derrew across the N65), for carrying away bog stuff, the particulars which
appeared in the GUARDIAN, was gone into.
John Brislane, the bailiff was examined, and stated
that three years ago, by direction of his master, Mr. Smyth, of Masonbrook, he
gave possession of Tracy’s holding to Broderick who paid up the arrears of rent
then due, amounting to 22 Pounds, except 3 acres which were to be reserved by
Tracy, and where to be as near his house as possible; no mention of the bog was
made at the time of transfer, but he understood that it was included in the
term ‘holding. ’
Mr. Coughlan solicitor for the defendant
contended that his client was entitled to his proportion of the bog, and he
required no more. He questioned the authority of the Bench to interfere, while
Mr. Dolphin for the complainant thought they had a perfect right, and contended
that as Mr. Smyth made no provision for Tracy about the bog, he (Tracy) set up
no title to it now.
Their worships not feeling satisfied with the
evidence before them adjourned the further hearing of the case for Mr. Smyth’s
evidence, or written statement, on which they would act.

Assault
Nicholas
Tracy of Shenahrush charged Michael and Patrick Kelly, of
Cooldaruhs, and Catherine Kelly of committing an assault on him, at the last
mentioned place on the 10th ult. , inflicting a severe cut on his
head and causing him other injuries.
He was examined by Mr. Percy Dolphin,
Solicitor, and stated that on the day in question he went to turn Kelly’s geese
out of his land where they were trespassing, when Catherine Kelly, wife of the
defendant, came in on his field and began to scold; she was shortly joined by
her husband and son, when the former without provaction struck him with a hurl
or wattle upon the head inflicting a severe cut and knocking him down.
He was cross-examined by Mr. Coughlan, but
there was nothing elicited to shake his direct testimony.
Patrick
Tracy, father of complainant, was examined, and stated that on
a former occasion Michael Kelly threatened and swore he would crack the skull
of one of his sons as he had done before (one of Tracy’s sons had been
fractured in another melee a few years ago. )
Several other witnesses were examined on both
sides, but there was nothing material solicited.
Kelly senior, after being severely admonished
by the Chairman was fined 1 Pound and costs 1 Pound, and to find bail to keep
the peace for two years, or in default to be imprisoned for two months in
Galway Gaol.
Cross Case
The Tracy’s were put on a similar rule of
bail, on a case brought by Kelly.
Aiding and Abetting
A charge of aiding and abetting against
Patrick Egan and Sabind Egan in the assault on Nicholas Tracy was dismissed.

Nov 1866Nenagh Guardian, Portumna Petty
Sessions:
Assault
Edward Burke, an old man, prosecuted John Tracy, of Shehanarush, for
assaulting him, by hitting him with a stone which knocked him off a cart, on
the evening of the 29th ult, on his way home for Portumna.
Witness said he was being carried by a man
named Kelly. The Tracy’s were shouting on the road; John Tracy had a stone in
his hand, and when the cart had passed about nine yards, witness got a blow of
a stone on the side which knocked him dead;
recollected nothing after that.
On cross-examination by Mr. Shepard, he
admitted that when the cart came up someone on it shouted “blood money.” (This
had reference to a portion of a fine, awarded to Tracy, for an assault
committed on him by the owner of the cart).
Mr. Shepherd asked a dismiss(al), on the
ground of discrepancy between Burke’s information and his evidence today; and
likewise, the provocation given by the Kelly party, to which he (Burke) had
attached himself on the evening of the alleged assault.
Case dismissed.
A charge of aiding and abetting against Patt, Nicholas and James Tracy, of
Sheshanarush, Michael and Thomas Ridge of Cahir, and Michael Tracy, of
Ballymartin, was likewise dismissed,”

I am looking for information on my
Great-Grandfather Edward Treacy, born about 1830 probably in Tynagh or Killimor
Galway, near Portumna. His parents were Patrick Treacy born around 1790 - 1794
in Tynagh and Mary Egan, born in 1811 in Loughrea.
He married Bridget Boland in Killimor Galway
on Jan. 20, 1857. There were no parents named for either spouse, but the
witnesses were John Boland and Michael Burke. I know that she died at
age 67 in Derrew, Eyrecourt, Galway on 20 Jan 1907. Edward Teacy was the
Informant. He died in Derrew, near Killimor in 1916.

I am researching the same Treacy family for my uncle, whose grandmother
was Bridget Treacy Moran. She is Michael's sister. Michael was living with
Bridget and her family when the 1915 NY Census was taken. I have attached an
image of the census. I also have a letter from Calvary Cemetery answering a
inquiry from Bridget's daughter, Margaret, which lists some of the family plots
in which Michael's plot is listed. Please contact me if you are interested in
collaborating. My email is bag925@embarqmail.com.
Looking forward to hearing from you.

Treacy / Tracy of Portumna Old Street
I am trying to find out information about my grandfather's family. They
lived at 83 Old Street in Portumna according to the 1901 census and in the 1911
census they were listed as living at 52 Old Street in Portumna. My
grandfather's name is Michael Treacy. He moved to New York and was a policeman.
Micheal was married to Maggie White, from Inistoige and had one son, Edward.
His father was William Treacy, a blacksmith, and was from Tipperary. He
married Catherine Ridge in 1873. I think she was a Portumna native. They had
the following children: James, Daniel, William, Kate, Sarah, Michael and Thomas.
There may have been other children but these are the only ones listed on the
1901 census.
Kate (Kathleen) immigrated to New York and Michael, James, and Sarah
followed. She might have been married to a Moran. Michael, James and Sarah are
buried together in Calvary Cemetary in Woodside, New York. The name on the
headstone is spelled as Tracey.
I am looking for any information available about the family and would
like to know if there are any remaining Treacy's from this family left in
Portumna.
Thanks,
Mary Anne Tracy 3 April 2012
Hi Mary Anne. Here is some information that may be of help to you. Your
grandfather's brother Dan was also a blacksmith in Portumna and one of his sons
was married in Ahascragh, Co. Galway, and his son is Philip Treacy the famous
hat designer in England. He makes hats for Royalty and anyone who can afford
them. Another son of Dan's, called William was married in England and he now
lives in Portland, Co. Tipperary, with his two sons, William and Michael.
Portland is just 2 miles from Portumna over the river Shannon. My husband
Gerard Treacy is a distant cousin of the Treacys.
The Ridges came from outside Portumna if you want to find out more
information about them contact Mrs Power, of Powers Post Office, Powers Cross,
Portumna as Mrs Power was Ridge.
Hope this information will help.

Michael Francis
Treacy Obituary On November 30, 1957, after the Army-Navy football
game, Midshipman Michael Francis Treacy of Santiago, Chile met Joan
Braciszewski of Philadelphia, PA at a post-game party in the
Bellevue-Stratford Hotel in Philadelphia. Navy won, by the way! As the story
goes, Mom left her date in order to spend time with Dad. Writing letters back
and forth was the beginning of a long-distance friendship that, within
months, became a courtship. The relationship bloomed and they were married in
a beautiful "June Week" ceremony at the US Naval Academy Chapel on
June 11, 1960. Within a year they became a family with Monica, and then
Michael, James and Christopher in the years that followed. We lost Dad on
Tuesday, 7 December, 2021. His passing was peaceful as he held mom's hand,
his wife of sixty-one years. Dad was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina on
August 30, 1936 to Irish American parents. His father, Francis Treacy, was an
American businessman, worked in Argentina and then they moved to Chile. From
Santiago, Dad left his home, country and family at age 14 to move to the
United States where he finished high school at St. John's Preparatory School
in Worcester, Massachusetts and also enlisted in the US Marine Reserves.
Observing Dad's intellect, his Company Officer identified potential in him
and helped Dad to win an appointment at the US Naval Academy's class of 1960.
He was active in the USNA Glee Club, the Catholic Choir and in sailing on the
Yard Patrol Boats. Upon earning his "Wings of Gold" in Pensacola,
FL he joined the Aviation Anti-Submarine community flying P-2
"Neptunes" and P-3 Orions (as well as S-2's and S-3's). In other
tours, Dad taught Spanish at the US Naval Academy, was part of the
Superintendent's Executive Staff and was Executive Officer of the ROTC unit
at the University of Wisconsin. Dad valued education, and in his free time,
he earned an MS from George Washington University and an MBA from the
University of Wisconsin. A tragic accident during his Department Head tour
inspired him to choose the Naval Safety Center as his next duty station where
he served as an Air Crash Investigator. This experience defined his career,
on and off active duty, and set the course for his life. His Safety expertise
called him to move to the Pacific Northwest to serve aboard the USS
Enterprise as the Safety Officer. The neighbors on Bainbridge Island knew
that someone important had arrived when dad would make use of the Captain's
Gig to drop him off at the Point White dock after work! Dad retired from the
US Navy in 1980 after serving 26 years. He joined Hughes Aircraft as a Safety
Engineer and was soon scooped up for an opportunity at the Boeing Aircraft
Company. At Boeing, Dad was a pioneer in airline Aviation Safety. He
published critical global annual reports that were distributed and read
across the world. Dad's natural curiosity and engineer's mind brought to
light practices that made flying safer. This work allowed him to tour the
world, inspecting facilities, lecturing and helping airlines to maintain and
fly their aircraft more safely. This work continues today and we are all
safer in the air because of Dad's critical work. In retirement, "Don
Miguel" taught Spanish at the Bainbridge Island Senior Center where he
was an active member of the community. Dad was a faithful, knowledgeable
Catholic, he loved woodworking, and especially loved collecting and using his
woodworking tools. He built the Taj Mahal of tree houses for his
grandchildren and he enjoyed every moment of his time as an
"abuelo" (grandfather). He and Mom moved to Williamsburg in 2009.
He was very active with both the local and national chapters of the US Naval
Academy Alumni Association, and specifically with the Class of 1960. He was
also active in the Ford's Colony community. Dad is survived by his wife, Joan
B. Treacy; his sisters, Suzanne McGovern and Margaret Boushehri; his
children, Monica, Michael (Tiffany), James (Christina) and Christopher
(Jennifer); and his grandchildren, Declan, Fiona, Meara, Emily, Lauren,
Connor, Hannah and Hagan Treacy. Dad's love for mom and for his family was
clear to anyone they met. His love for family was always his first priority.
Theirs was a partnership of mutual support for one another's dreams,
aspirations, educations and careers despite nine and a half years of
separation during Dad's Navy deployments. If you met Dad, you immediately
knew that he was the most interesting man you would ever know. He was well
travelled, educated and sophisticated. We remember Dad's faith, his dry and
incisive wit, his intelligence, his curiosity and his love of gadgets, gizmos
and whirligigs. Visitation will be held at St. Olaf's Catholic Church in
Williamsburg, VA at 11:00 am on Saturday, 18 December 2021. A funeral Mass
will follow at 12:00 pm. An inurnment ceremony will take place at the US
Naval Academy this spring on a date to be determined. https://www.bainbridgereview.com/obituaries/michael-francis-treacy/ https://www.legacy.com/us/obituaries/vagazette/name/michael-treacy-obituary?id=31871012 |
